Jon Bon Jovi’s heartthrob heartache

It’s hard to be in demand. Forty-eight-year-old Bon Jovi frontman Jon Bon Jovi admits he’s always resented his heartthrob status, believing that in earlier years his good looks played havoc with the ability to be taken seriously as a songwriter and a musician.

According to hit songwriter – who recently admitted he’s hoping to release a solo album once the New Jersey rockers have wrapped up their current Circle World tour at the end of 2011 – says he gets more comfortable in his own skin the older he gets. “At 26, 27, I was pissed off about [my looks],” Bon Jovi confessed recently.

“Because I thought, ‘Goddammit! I’m working so hard! I’m trying so hard! I’m trying to do what I want to do, while I’m trying to please you!” These days, when female fans hit him up over his physical attributes he’s much more kindly. “Now I can say: ‘Thank you – that’s a wonderful compliment,’” the singer admits.

Bon Jovi are due to hit Australia on their Circle world trek in December, the band set to perform classics like “Livin’ On A Prayer” and “You Give Love A Bad Name” as well as new songs from their latest, chart-topping 2009 release. With over 120 million albums sold so far and gigs in front of 34 million fans, the singer admits he’s not as young as he used to be... but is still determined to look the part.

“I’m vain inasmuch as I think I’m terribly out of shape right now,” he joked. “If you want to be perfectly honest, I’m 10 pounds overweight and I’m drinking too much and I’m bored to tears. Okay, I’m not the fat Elvis. At 48, I look OK. But you know… I’m coming to real good terms with getting older.”
